This article explains the "Update Costs on Projects" function in Next Project, which automates the allocation of internal resource costs—such as time, machinery, and materials—across projects while generating corresponding revenue. It covers the configuration of base data required to enable this function, including how to set up and link the necessary projects and resources for both the Machinery/Materials and Time cost functions.
The "Update Costs on Projects" function manages costs for internal resources such as time, machinery, and materials. It charges projects with costs for these resources while simultaneously generating revenue for personnel and/or machine projects — similar to internally renting out personnel and machinery. This process is handled automatically and controlled through your basic settings.
Setting Up Base Data for the Machinery/Materials Function
First, check whether the project "10000 Machinery/Materials" already exists — if it doesn't, go ahead and create it.

Set up the project so that time cannot be reported on it — this means giving it a status of Admin in the standard implementation of NEXT Project.
Any resources that should be included in the calculation of machine/material costs need to be linked to the parent project "10000 Machinery/Materials." You can do this by selecting the parent project in the price list for resources.
